This was an early commission. The subject matter of the original media of photo-realist painting has been the cause of much of the critical controversy surrounding it. Glittering imagery of nihilistic banality from the waste-bin of western culture. Images of shop fronts, car-parks and cheap advertising material, even snapshots of gymkhanas. Photo-realism represents the full turn of the circle of ‘anti-art’ as ‘art’ that began with the revolutionary anti-cultural activities of the Dadaists who fought to destroy the ‘nice nice bourgeois’. The collapse of modernism and the myth of the avant-garde was already apparent at its inception ‘the true Dadaist is against Dada’, and the ready-mades and happenings which became the back-bone of ‘modern art’ have culminated in the hand-painted simulations of photographs of hyper-bourgeois anaesthesia.
