‘Behold the Servant of the Lord’ is a re-working of Dante Gabriel Rossetti’s second Pre-Raphaelite painting, reproduced with appropriated advertising imagery. The humble, cowering virgin of the original is replaced here with a Nietzschean uber-bitch, decidedly unimpressed by the possibility of a metaphysical world. Nietzsche, however merely went on to replace the ‘metaphysical systems’ and ‘extant religions’ with his own metaphysics of, “will to power.” Alfred Jarry wrote, “Pataphysics, whose etymological spelling should be epi (meta ta feesika) and actual orthography ‘pataphysics, ...is the science of that which is superinduced upon metaphysics, ...extending as far beyond metaphysics as the latter extends beyond physics...” The College of ‘Pataphysics went on to write, “The College alone takes no measures to save anyone. Since conscious ‘Pataphysics simultaneously negates and affirms itself...”
